Disposable vs pod vs pen: which for you?

If you are new to vaping, the device names are the first obstacle. Disposable, pod, pen, mod — they sound like variations on the same thing, and shop staff tend to explain them in jargon. Here is the plain version of the three main types, what each actually costs you over time, and who each one suits.

Disposables

An all-in-one device: battery, liquid and coil sealed in one unit, ready to use, thrown away when it is done. Nothing to refill, nothing to charge, nothing to learn.

Best for: first-timers, people who vape occasionally, anyone who wants zero maintenance, and trying a flavour before committing to a bottle of it.

The trade-offs:

• Cost adds up. You are replacing an entire device — battery, coil and casing — every time, not just the liquid. For daily use this is comfortably the most expensive way to vape.
• Waste. Every disposable contains a lithium battery. They should not go in household waste, and dedicated vape recycling is thin on the ground in South Africa. E-waste drop-off points are the realistic option.

Refillable pods

A reusable battery with a small pod you refill from a bottle of e-liquid. Some have replaceable coils; some use a pod you swap every week or two. This is the middle ground, and it is where most regular vapers settle.

Best for: anyone vaping daily who has worked out the flavour and strength they like.

The trade-offs:

• A little upkeep. Refilling, charging, and replacing a coil or pod periodically. It is a couple of minutes a week, not a hobby.
• Upfront cost. You buy the device once before you buy any liquid.
• You need to buy the right liquid. Pods take high-strength salt nicotine, typically 20mg. Putting low-strength freebase liquid in one will feel like nothing.

Why pods work out cheaper

The maths is mostly about how you buy the liquid. South Africa’s excise duty on vaping liquid is R3.29 per millilitre from 30 April 2026 — charged per millilitre regardless of format, and the same whether or not the liquid contains nicotine.

That duty is identical whether those millilitres arrive in a 2ml disposable or a 30ml bottle. What differs is everything wrapped around them: with a disposable you also pay for a fresh battery, coil, casing and packaging every 2ml. With a refillable pod you pay for those once and then buy liquid.

The break-even depends on how much you vape and what you pay locally, but the direction is consistent: light or occasional use favours disposables, daily use favours refillables, usually within the first month or two.

Vape pens and larger devices

Bigger batteries, refillable tanks, replaceable coils and adjustable settings — power, airflow, sometimes temperature. These produce substantially more vapour and are aimed at people who have been vaping a while.

Best for: experienced users who want control over the setup and the bigger vapour that comes with it.

The trade-offs:

• A learning curve. Coil resistance, wattage, airflow, priming a new coil so you do not burn it. None of it is difficult, but it is not plug-and-play.
• Different liquid entirely. These run low-strength freebase liquid, typically 3–6mg. This is the single most common and most unpleasant beginner mistake: putting 20mg salt nicotine into a high-power device delivers a genuinely horrible amount of nicotine. The strength and the hardware have to match.
• Size. They are not pocket-discreet in the way a pod is.

How to choose

• Never vaped and finding out if it suits you? A disposable. Lowest commitment, nothing to learn.
• Vaping daily and know what you like? A refillable pod. Cheaper per millilitre, far less waste.
• Want big vapour and full control? A larger device — but drop to 3–6mg freebase liquid when you switch.
• Switching from a pack a day? Start with a 20mg pod or disposable. That is the strength most people successfully switch on.

Whichever you pick, the strength matters more than the hardware. A great device at the wrong nicotine level is a bad experience — get the strength right first.
